Fair warning: I was born here, roamed the streets as a kid, so your humble reporter/photographer may be biased. Manhattan, aka New York County, is the core of New York City: the smallest, most-densely populated borough that is the seat of city government and the most concentrated source of the Big Apple’s economic, cultural and political power. Wall Street, Broadway, Garment District, Chinatown, Little Italy, Museum Mile, The Village, SOHO, Tribeca – these world-famous geographical markers are all in New York, New York. The United Nations, Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, World Trade Center (pre- and post-9/11) are all within Manhattan’s borders. For most New Yorkers, “the city” means Manhattan.
The NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission has declared thousands of Manhattan structures worthy of protection. Even so, the New York skyline and streetscape is constantly changing. Some of the photos you’ll encounter in this section of Metro-Photo.com are no longer possible, because new construction now blocks the view – or because the building has been demolished to make way for something new.
Manhattan is where important urban building types were defined: tenements, skyscrapers, warehouses, libraries, museums, courthouses and municipal buildings. (There’s even a Skyscraper Museum and a Tenement Museum.) Manhattan is where the epitome of “parkitecture” – Central Park and Riverside Park – was practiced.
