Historic Main Street Station was built in 1901 by Seaboard Air Line Railroad* and Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. Seaboard shifted service to the Broad Street Station (now Science Museum), but C&O service continued until Amtrak took over. Main Street Station was closed after flooding by Hurricane Agnes in 1972, and fires in 1976 and 1983. Amtrak resumed service at the end of 2003.
Today, the station is also used as a wedding venue.
*Seaboard put “Air Line” in its name to denote the shortest distance between two points (according to Wikipedia ), but I recall another marketing angle: In the 1950s, the railroad claimed that its air-cushioned shock absorbers protected freight and comforted passengers.
