NYC / Bronx, NY

The Bronx – the only borough to have “The” in its official name – is also the only part of New York City to be part of the mainland.* Manhattan and Staten Island are islands, Brooklyn and Queens are the westernmost part of Long Island. New York State’s website points out that Bronx County was the last county in New York to incorporate. Also, the county is the third most densely populated county in the U.S., even though a quarter of The Bronx is either cemetery or parkland.

In decades past, The Bronx was victim of terrible decay, arson and crime (and the movie, “Fort Apache, The Bronx”). The South Bronx still has some of the poorest neighborhoods and highest crime. This hasn’t helped Bronx real estate – and by extension, the condition of its architecture. However, the borough is incredibly rich in Art Deco architecture, particularly in and around the Grand Concourse Historic District. City Island is quite photogenic, with charming examples of Queen Anne and Shingle style homes reminiscent of New England.

* The “mainland” designation comes with an asterisk; The Bronx has its own islands – principally City Island, Hart Island, and Rikers Island. City Island is quite photogenic; Rikers Island, not so much.
